Not far from our new digs in Alexandria is a bike-ped trail
along Holmes Run. I’d noticed it before, but hadn’t checked it out yet, until Kris
and I decided to take in a little Sunday bike ride there on July 13. And what a
nice surprise. It was a wonderful urban trail, miles longer than I’d imagined and
sure to become a backyard favorite. Since we had other things to do later that
day, we cheated and tossed the bikes in the truck and drove down to the park
and ride, which would save us the 200-foot grind back up the hill. Yes, kinda
whimpy.
The ride started along Cameron Run and first thing we saw
was a deer wandering down the middle of the creek. We soon split off to Holmes
Run and cruised the greenway enclosing the broad creek. The path connected
urban parks, ponds and ballfields with adjoining neighborhoods, as any good
multi-use trail should. The trail passed a big ol’ tree, squirted through a long,
skinny tunnel, and finally ended at a construction zone with a ‘trail closed’
sign. That forced us onto the sidewalks and arterials for the next couple of
miles over the hill to Shirlington. We picked up the Four Mile Trail there,
which put us on familiar ground. We then zipped over to the scenic Mount Vernon
Trail for the loop back to Old Town and the waiting truck. It’s muy bueno having
such a slew of bike trails to pick from in the DC metro area. Now if we can
only get them to connect one to our deserving little neighborhood…
