The epic story of the new Rock Trail at Larrabee State Park
reached a zenith with an official trail dedication on Saturday, April 26th. Alas,
we had crummy weather, but great turnout. A cold rain fell just as the lineup
of speakers began to impress us all with profound words of trail wisdom. It
even snowed lightly, just when I started speaking (lol). Thanks to the Director
of State Parks for joining us in the celebration, and of course, to Arlen, Amber
and Paul for getting it all organized.
After I’d spent a few hours’ the day before tidying up some
loose ends along the trail, it was really cool to just hike it with friends and
enjoy the high-end scenery without having to slog around in the dirt. Fortunately,
the rain didn’t last. Many thanks to the dozens of volunteers with Chuckanut Conservancy,
Washington Trails Association and Mount Baker Club for the thousands of hours of
effort that went into the project over the past three years. REI gets extra
kudos for coughing up a major chunk of dough needed to pay for the 17 stairways.
This one gets a 90 decibel woohoo and I was glad to be a part of it!
