On June 24, 2012, Kris and I finally made the pilgrimage to
Teddy Roosevelt’s island in the Potomac, formerly Mason’s Island, where an
appropriate memorial was established in the 1930s to monumentalize one of America’s
more noteworthy conservationists.He
also happened to be our 26th president. The site includes a sweeping plaza with
sculptures, an imposing statue, geometric ponds and engravings with some of the
man’s pithier quotes about nature, youth and the world they inherit. The network of nature trails is integral to
the memorial, circling the island through marshes and past occasional views of
the District—a fitting tribute to a pretty cool, outdoor kinda guy.
