Big Schloss (WV, VA)

Queen Kristine of Big Schloss.
The 2.2-mile hike to the top of Big Schloss in the George Washington National Forest turned out to be one of the more enjoyable outings of the year and we will definitely go back for another round.  We departed the Glover Park homestead at a civil hour on September 9, 2012, and reached the trailhead at Wolf Gap outside Woodstock, VA, around lunch time.  A steady climb on a good trail led to the crest of a ridge with nice views.  A gradual descent took us to a fork on the right that ambled up to the summit area which straddles the Virgina/West Virginia state line.  A shallow and somewhat dramatic chasm was crossed on a stout bridge and an easy scramble led to the scenic highpoint just beyond.  We were surprised with an exceptional 360 view from the slabby, convoluted rock formation that comprised the summit.  It’s a popular hike, but wasn’t crowded that day, despite perfect weather and temperatures hovering between 70 and 80.  Tibbet Knob is reached from the same trailhead and is officially on the list for 2013.
